Carey Island Features

Hatter’s Castle

• The first colonial-style building on Carey Island, built in 1923.
• Approximately 495 sqm in size.
• Now a charming guesthouse for events and visitors.
• Gazetted as a National Heritage site in 2012.

Carey Island Golf Club

• Formerly known as the Carey Island Sports Club.
• Established on 1st July 1930, with a built-up area of 985 sqm.
• Features an 18-hole heritage course designed by J.R. Gilbert, with layout ideas by YBhg. Tun Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Sarji.
• Gazetted in 2012.

Guest Bungalow

• Originally the Mill Manager’s Bungalow, occupied since 10th January 1929.
• Approximately 592 sqm.
• Now a guesthouse for staycations, weddings, meetings, and filming.
• Gazetted in 2012.

Carey Island Group Hospital

• Central medical facility for the island’s plantation divisions
• In use since 1st January 1928, with a built-up area of 6,145 sqm.
• Still operational today for outpatient services.

Technical Training Centre Hostel

• Built on 1st January 1930, covering  542 sqm.
• Initially a provision shop, later a Technical Training Centre.
• Now serves as the West Estate Administrative Office.

Tea Factory

• Operational since 1st January 1952 for a 1,000-acre tea trial plot.
• Later became a clubhouse for Asian staff, then a workshop for the West Oil Mill.

West Estate Office

• Built on 1st January 1925, covering 413 sqm.
• Originally the headquarters for Jugra Land and Carey Ltd.
• Became the West Estate office after 1960 under Harrison and Crosfield’s Pataling Rubber Co.

Police Station & Post Office

• In use since 1st January 1927, with a 367 sqm footprint.
• Currently houses the post office and Environmental Research Centre.

Mill Manager’s Bungalow

• Built on 10th January 1929, approximately 522 sqm.
• Now a guesthouse for public staycations.

West Estate Senior Assistant Manager’s Bungalow

• Occupied since 1st January 1926, with a 694 sqm area.
• Initially for the Assistant Office Manager; later became the official residence of the West Estate Senior Assistant.

West Estate Manager’s Bungalow

• Built on 1st December 1926, the largest bungalow at 1,200 sqm.
• Originally for the Resident General Manager of Jugra Land and Carey Ltd.
• Now known as the VIP Bungalow, open for guest stays and events.
